"USS SOMERS MEMORIAL PLAQUE
DEDICATION"
On September
4th, 1804, 214 years ago to the day, our ship's namesake, then Lieutenant
Richard Somers and his 12 volunteer sailors, in an attempt to destroy the
Barbary Pirate ships in Tripoli Harbor (Lybia) were killed in a premature
explosion aboard the United States Ship Intrepid. The Intrepid was laden
with explosives and was to be abandoned in the harbor and ignited.
On September 4th, 2018, a group of former shipmates from the USS Somers
DD947 and DDG34, along with guests, the staff of the US Navy Memorial and
special guests, Richard Somers descendant Dean and Vicki Somers were present
at the US Navy Memorial in Washington, DC for the dedication of the USS
Somers Memorial Plaque.
This video was assembled and prepared with audio by Dean and Vicki Somers
and presented to the USS Somers Crewmembers Association for all former
Somers shipmates. We express our sincere thanks for their attendance and for
their effort in the making of this video.
A grateful thank you to all Somers shipmates and friends for their unselfish
donations that made the USS Somers Memorial Plaque Dedication a reality. All
should be proud of this memorial to the Somers and to all who have sailed
aboard Somers ships. Bravo Zulu.
